an anchor

"Hope is the anchor of our souls. I know of no one who is not in need of hope—young or old, strong or weak, rich or poor. As the prophet Ether exhorted, “Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God."

Christmas is love

"Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values. It is peace because we have found peace in the Savior’s teachings. It is the time we realize most deeply that the more love is expended, the more there is of it for others."

You are cherished

"In whatever country you live, however young or inadequate you feel, or however aged or limited you see yourself as being, I testify you are individually loved of God, you are central to the meaning of His work, and you are cherished and prayed for by the presiding officers of His Church. The personal value, the sacred splendor of every one of you, is the very reason there is a plan for salvation and exaltation."
--Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, "Because of Your Faith", October 2010 General Conference

Our efforts are enough

I do not think it pleases the Lord when we worry because we think we never do enough or that what we do is never good enough.  (President Boyd K Packer, Gen Conf Oct 2004, "The Least of These")

Give thanks daily

"In reality, there aren’t many things in a day that are totally without significance. Even the mundane and repetitious can be tiny but significant building blocks that in time establish the discipline and character and order needed to realize our plans and dreams. Therefore, as you ask in prayer for your daily bread, consider thoughtfully your needs—both what you may lack and what you must protect against. As you retire to bed, think about the successes and failures of the day and what will make the next day a little better. And thank your Heavenly Father for the manna He has placed along your path that sustained you through the day."

Prayer

"Not a day has gone by that I have not communicated with my Father in Heaven through prayer. It is a relationship I cherish—one I would literally be lost without. If you do not now have such a relationship with your Father in Heaven, I urge you to work toward that goal. As you do so, you will be entitled to His inspiration and guidance in your life."

This is the day...

"Life is not meant to be appreciated only in retrospect. 'This is the day which the Lord hath made … ,' the Psalmist wrote. 'Rejoice and be glad in it.' Brothers and sisters, no matter our circumstances, no matter our challenges or trials, there is something in each day to embrace and cherish. There is something in each day that can bring gratitude and joy if only we will see and appreciate it."

We are all imperfect

"We must recognize that we are all imperfect—that we are beggars before God. Haven’t we all, at one time or another, meekly approached the mercy seat and pleaded for grace? Haven’t we wished with all the energy of our souls for mercy—to be forgiven for the mistakes we have made and the sins we have committed? Because we all depend on the mercy of God, how can we deny to others any measure of the grace we so desperately desire for ourselves?"

Labor tirelessly

How different the world would be if there were not those greatest and most beloved of men, our prophets and apostles... who labor tirelessly and without ceasing in our behalf.  Those glorious holders of the priesthood have put behind themselves all personal agendas,... all worldly titles and vestments, and have subjugated themselves totally to the priesthood.  They epitomize through their service the Savior's admonition that the greatest shall be servant to the least.  (Beverly Campbell, Eve and the Choice Made in Eden, 2003, p 144)

The Monument

The Monument
God, before He sent His children to earth gave each of them a very carefully selected package of problems.
These, He promised, smiling, are yours alone.  No one else may have the blessings these problems will bring you.
And only you have the special talents and abilities that will be needed to make these problems your servants.
Now go down to your birth and to your forgetfulness.  Know that I love you beyond measure.  These problems that I give you are a symbol of that love.
The monuments you make of your life with the help of your problems will be a symbol of your love for me, your Father.

How did God bless me today?

As you start to write you could ask yourself, "How did God bless me today?"  If you do that long enough, and with faith, you will find yourself remembering blessings.  And sometimes, you will have gifts brought to your mind which you failed to notice during the day, but which you will then know were a touch of God's hand in your life.  (Henry B. Eyring, "Remembrance and Gratitude", Ensign, Nov 1989, 13)

The very thought of Thee

Jesus, the very thought of Thee fills my heart with inexpressible joy.  It controls every part of my being.  My life, my loves, my ambitions are molded, enlivened, and given purpose because I know that Thou art the Christ, the Holy One.  (Keith B McMullin, "Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee," Ensign, May 2004, 3)

Procrastination

Procrastination is the father of a countless family of things that come too late.  Procrastination means making an appointment with opportunity to "call again tomorrow."  It kills self-control, saps mental energy, makes man a creature of circumstances instead of their creator.  There is one brand of procrastination that is a virtue.  It is never doing today a wrong that can be put off till tomorrow, never performing an act today that may make tomorrow ashamed.  (William George Jordan, "The Power of Truth", Improvement Era, May 1934, 273)

Satan has declared war on mothers

"For Satan has declared war on motherhood. He knows that those who rock the cradle can rock his earthly empire. And he knows that without righteous mothers loving and leading the next generation, the kingdom of God will fail."

Open the window of inspiration

Asking for a testimony of truth opens the window of inspiration.  Prayer is the most common and powerful way to invite inspiration.  Merely asking a question, even in our minds, will start to open the windows.  The scriptures teach, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. (Luke 11:9)"  -Elder Allan F. Packer, "Finding Strength in Challenging Times!," General Conference, Ensign, May 2009

Walk Confidently

I testify that by the Spirit of Christ and by the Holy Ghost, you may walk confidently in whatever difficulties will come.  Because you are so valuable, some of your trials may be severe.  You need never be discouraged or afraid.  The way through difficulties has always been prepared for you, and you will find it if you exercise faith.  (Pres. Henry B Eyring, General Young Women's Meeting, March 29 2008)

God never leaves us alone

I am testifying that God never leaves us alone, never leaves us unaided in the challenges that we face. "Nor will he, so long as time shall last, or the earth shall stand, or there shall be one man (or woman or child) upon the face of thereof to be saved. (Moroni 7:36)" -Elder Jeffrey R. to be full of love

Alma instructed his brethren to humble themselves before the Lord, to pray continually about temptation, and be led by the Holy Spirit.  And if they did these three things, they would become "humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering" (Alma 13:28).  In sum, basically, Alma instructs us to humble ourselves, to pray and then to listen as we are led by the Holy Spirit.  Following these three steps will assist us in acquiring the ability to become full of love.  (Paul R. Cheesman, ed, The Book of Mormon: The Keystone Scripture, 1988, 153)

Show me how to help

I heard a man of prominence say the other day, "I have amended the language of my prayers.  Instead of saying, 'Bless the poor and the sick and the needy,' I now say, 'Father, show me how to help the poor and the sick and the needy, and give me resolution to do so.'"  (Gordon B. God teaches us with his blessings

How can you and I remember, always, the goodness of God, that we can retain a remission of our sins?... The Holy Ghost brings back memories of what God has taught us.  And one of the ways God teaches us is with his blessings; and so, if we choose to exercise faith, the Holy Ghost will bring God's kindness to our remembrance.  (Henry B. Eyring, To Draw Closer to God: A Collection of Discourses, 1997, 77-78)

Why do we need prophets?

"Today is not different from ages past. The Lord does not love the people of our day any less than in past times. One of the glorious messages of the Restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ is that God continues to speak to His children! He is not hidden in the heavens but speaks today as He did in ancient days."

Freedom must be carefully chosen

"Now listen to me, people for this is the key—evil can be twisted into virtue if you phrase it just right.  Any vice is acceptable if you cloak it as an issue of freedom.  Any immorality is worth fighting for if you tell them they are fighting for choice, if you wrap it in the mantle of privacy and freedom.  So take their moral agency and turn it on them.  But be patient… be patient… it takes time to turn the truth upside down."  Prologue: The Brothers, Chris Stewart, page 101, 2003

Hold on a Little Longer

"If ever you are tempted to become discouraged or to lose faith, remember those faithful Saints who remained true in Kirtland. Hold on a little longer. You can do this! You are part of a special generation. You were prepared and preserved to live at this important time in the existence of our beautiful planet earth. You have a celestial pedigree and therefore have all the necessary talents to make your life an eternal success story."

Increase your strength through prayer

Let us pray for health and strength and wisdom.  Pray for faith to carry on when our strength seems insufficient, and the answer is delayed.  Let our prayers go out as well as upward.  We must work as well as pray.  Let us pray for peace and concord, in our hearts, our homes, and country... Prayer will rid our hearts of hatred; it will chasten our ambitions... Let us pray.  (Hugh B. Brown, Eternal Quest, 1956, p 81)

Can any good thing...

And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?... John 1: 46  How often do we judge by generalizations instead of by taking the time to stop and think, to ponder, to learn for ourselves?  Are we doing ourselves a disservice?  Nathanael went to see if any good thing could come out of Nazareth and he met the Son of God who greeted him by saying, "Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile." (John 1: 47) and was promised for his open mindedness and belief that "Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." (John 1: 51).

He is always there

Whenever these moments of our extremity come, we must not succumb to the fear that God has abandoned us or that He does not hear our prayers.  He does hear us.  He does see us.  He does love us.  When we are in dire circumstances and want to cry, "Where art thou?" it is imperative that we remember He is right there with us--where He has always been!  We must continue to believe, continue to have faith, continue to pray and plead with heaven, even if we feel for a time our prayers are not heard and that God has somehow gone away. He is there.  Our prayers are heard.  And when we weep He and the angels of heaven weep with us.  (Elder Jeffrey R Holland, Lessons from Liberty Jail, Ensign, Sep 09, 29)

We are not the same

God is the same yesterday, today and forever, but we are not.  Each day, ours is the challenge to access the power of the Atonement so that we can truly change, become more Christlike, and qualify for the gift of exaltation and live eternally with God, Jesus Christ, and our families. Stones

In a world of accusations and unfriendliness, it is easy to gather and cast stones.  But before we do so, let us remember the words of the One who is our Master and model: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone."  Brothers and sisters, let us put down our stones.  Let us be kind.  Let us forgive.  Let us talk peacefully with each other.  Let the love of God fill our hearts.  Let us do good unto all men. We always have help

In the gospel of Jesus Christ you have help from both sides of the veil and you must never forget that.  When disappointment and discouragement strike--and they will--you remember and never forget that if our eyes could be opened we would see horses and chariots of fire as far as the eye can see riding at reckless speed to come to our protection (see 2 Kings 6: 16-17).  They will always be there, these armies of heaven, in defense of Abraham's seed.  (Jeffrey R. Holland, "For Times of Trouble," New Era, Oct 1980, p 15)

Secret to Happiness

The moment you have a self at all, there is a possibility of putting yourself first-wanting to be the center-wanting to be God, in fact.  That was the sin of Satan: and that was the sin he taught the human race... What Satan put into the heads of our remote ancestors was the idea that they could "be like gods"-could set up on their own as if they had created themselves-be their own masters-invent some sort of happiness for themselves outside God, apart from God.  And out of that hopeless attempt has come... the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.  (C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, p 49)

Honesty

"God our Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, are beings of absolute, perfect, and complete honesty and truth. We are sons and daughters of God. Our destiny is to become like Him. We seek to be perfectly honest and true like our Father and His Son. Honesty describes the character of God, and therefore honesty is at the very heart of our spiritual growth and spiritual gifts. Honesty, integrity, and truth are eternal principles that significantly shape our experience in mortality and help determine our eternal destiny. For a disciple of Christ, honesty is at the very heart of spirituality."

The power of the scriptures

Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked-- And land their souls, yea, their immortal souls, at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven, to sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and with Jacob, and with all our holy fathers, to go no more out.  Helaman 3: 29-30

Sticks and stones (or arrows)

But as many as there were who did not believe in the words of Samuel were angry with him; and they cast stones at him upon the wall, and also many shot arrows at him as he stood upon the wall; but the Spirit of the Lord was with him, insomuch that they could not him him with their stones neither with their arrows. (Helaman 16: 2).  Why did this inspire me today?  Made me think of the saying, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.  God can protect us both from angry and hurtful words as well as the stones and arrows (sticks) that are thrown at us.  There truly is no reason to not rely on Him for everything!

Who is Jesus to you?

Of all the things for which I feel grateful, one stands [above all the others].  That is a living testimony of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Almighty God, the Prince of Peace, the Holy One... Jesus is my friend.  He is my exemplar.  He is my teacher.  He is my healer.  He is my leader.  He is my Savior and my Redeemer.  He is my God and my King.  Gratefully, and with love, I bear witness of these things.  (President Gordon B. Who is Jesus

"We discover he is more than the babe in Bethlehem, more than the carpenter’s son, more than the greatest teacher ever to live. We come to know him as the Son of God. He never fashioned a statue, painted a picture, wrote a poem, or led an army. He never wore a crown or held a scepter or threw around his shoulder a purple robe. His forgiveness was unbounded, his patience inexhaustible, his courage without limit. Jesus changed men. He changed their habits, their opinions, their ambitions. He changed their tempers, their dispositions, their natures. He changed men’s hearts."

We are not perfect

God is fully aware that you and I are not perfect.  Let me add: God is also fully aware that the people you think are perfect are not.  And yet we spend so much time and energy comparing ourselves to others--usually comparing our weaknesses to their strengths.  This drives us to create expectations for ourselves that are impossible to meet.  As a result, we never celebrate our good efforts because they seem to be less than what someone else does.  (President Dieter F Uchtodorf, General Relief Society Meeting, Sept 2011)

Don't be limited in your views with regard to your neighbors' virtues... You must enlarge your souls toward others if you [would] do like Jesus... God is a person

God our Father is not a feeling or an idea or a force.  He is a holy person who, as the scriptures teach, has a face and hands and a glorious immortal body.  He is real, He knows each of us individually, and He loves us, every one.  He wants to bless us.  (Elder J Devn Cornish, General Conference, October 2011)

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?... Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8: 35, 37-39

Power to bind on earth and heaven

It may seem to some to be a very bold doctrine that we talk of--a power which records or binds on earth and binds in heaven.  Nevertheless, in all ages of the world, whenever the Lord has given a dispensation of the priesthood to any man by actual revelation, or any set of men, this power has always been given.  Hence, whatsoever those men did in authority, in the name of the Lord, and did it truly and faithfully, and kept a proper and faithful record of the same, it became a law on earth and in heaven, and could not be annulled, according to the decrees of the great Jehovah.  This is a faithful saying.  Who can hear it?  Doctrine & Covenants 128: 9

Storms are inescapable

The storms will still beat at our doors from time to time, for they are an inescapable part of our existence in mortality.  We, however, will be far better equipped to deal with them, to learn from them, and to overcome them if we have the gospel at our core and the love of the Savior in our hearts. (President Thomas S. Monson, General Conference, October 2011)  Remember, the rains fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon the houses of BOTH the foolish and the wise men, but it was the wise man whose house fell not for it was founded upon a rock (the teachings of the Savior and His prophets).

Painful things happen even to the pure and perfect

In fact, in a resurrected, otherwise perfected body, our Lord of this sacrament table has chosen to retain for the benefit of his disciples the wounds in his hands and his feet and his side—signs, if you will, that painful things happen even to the pure and perfect. Signs, if you will, thatpain in this world is not evidence that God doesn’t love you. It is thewounded Christ who is the captain of our soul—he who yet bears the scars of sacrifice, the lesions of love and humility and forgiveness. He is Risen!

O how great the goodness of our God, who prepareth a way for our escape from the grasp of this awful monster; yea, that monster, death and hell, which I call the death of the body, and also the death of the spirit.  (2 Nephi 9:10)  He Is Risen!  Happy Easter!
